Новая глава в истории ДСО. После качественного блэка группа начала делать такое, что просто УХ. Стена звука, горы диссонанса, характерный вокал, оккультизм, нагромождение всяческих элементов и фишечек - все то, что во многом делает современный блэк интересным и что до сих пор используется и воспроизводится десятками бм команд разномастных калибров и мощностей - все это здесь есть. Причем ДСО от релиза к релизу умудряются не только держать высочайшую планку качества, но и делать свою музыку с каждым разом все насыщенней и жесче, хотя казалось бы - куда дальше? И в этом случае для меня вершиной их эволюции является последний на данный момент полноформат - Paracletus.
Французские маги при этом умудряются не только оставлять клонов армию далеко позади, но и оставаться "на острие", интересными, не приедаться.

А это дорогого стоит. Классика.

Альбом очень крутой, но я все же среди тех, кому он кажется слегка затянутым и началом нового пути одной из лучших групп в блэке.
Но это лишь начало, последующие релизы для меня на порядок выше, плюс здесь их стиль не до конца сформировался.
Эмбиентно-молитвенные вставки здесь просто космос космический.

The title says "If You Seek His Monument, Look Around You." This album was a huge change for Black Metal and the band itself. It inspired so many other bands, if not by incorporating avant-garde elements into Black Metal, then by embracing theistic Satanism. Indeed, it's a monumental work... 77 minutes of 13 tracks which are divided into four parts by the three ''Prayers'' and fourth part starts with ''Carnal Malefactor''. It's truly an avant-garde album but it's mid-tempo, sometimes faster and more intense [like in ''Sola Fide'', ''Odium Nostrvm''or ''Jubilate Deo (O Be Joyful in the Lord)''], yet still melodic with raw vocals. They claim to be inspired by In Slaughter Natives, Genocide Organ and Krzysztof Penderecki for instance. And it can be heard even here, because the vibe of this album is as gloomy as their works, yet deeply religious. It's like a blind looking for redemption. Lyrics are just outstanding. It was very interesting and intelligent, yet controversial to write blasphemous and Satanic lyrics based mostly on Georges Battaile and the Bible itself. "Hymn of the Cherubim" sung by the monks and used as an intermezzo in ''Carnal Malefactor'' with three ''Prayers'' and Biblical quotations make a listener feels like attending to a mass. But not a Christian mass. It's more like a Heretic/Gnostic mass of Cathars persecuted by the Pope and Catholic Church, so they blaspheme Yahweh, the Demiurge. This album could have been very controversial and divisive when it was released, but with time it became a piece of great Black Metal art. The album is very long, but there is no boring moments here. Just a monumental masterpiece.

Переслушал альбом (и "Kénôse" заодно).
Добавлю немного инфы о сэмплах религиозных песнопений на альбоме (иногда интересно в них покопаться).

Первый - из композиции "First Prayer" - интересующиеся григорианскими хоралами искали долго - кажется, до 2018 г.
Здесь использован отрывок из "Magnificat verbum caro factum est" - со сборника песнопений "Salve Regina" (Chœur des moines des abbayes de Bricquebec, Citeaux, Sept-Fons, Timadeuc). Это, в целом, интересная "полевая" запись, где в песнопения периодически вмешивается отдалённый звук колоколов.
В основе - "Магнификат" (славословие Девы Марии) - на латинский текст из Новой Вульгаты.
Рус. синодальный перевод отрывка (Луки, 1:48-55):

Это одно из главных католических песнопений ("Величит душа моя Господа") и, наверное, поэтому оно открывает альбом в качестве "Первой молитвы".
В середине "Carnal Malefactor" мы слышим православную "Херувимскую песню":

В литургии перед этой песней священник читает молитву "Никтоже достоин от связавшихся плотскими похотьми и сластьми приходити, или приближитися, или служити Тебе, Царю славы: еже бо служити Тебе велико и страшно и самем Небесным Силам...", а во время пения Херувимской песни совершается т. н. "Великий вход", когда идёт на Голгофу Христос ("Спаситель всех человеков, возникший из постыдного материнства" - из текста Deathspell Omega). Вставка Херувимской песни в трек с кощунственными религиозно-плотскими описаниями звучит тут очень язвительно и как раз к месту.

Со временем пришёл к выводу, что это лучший их альбом. Прогрессивнее и интереснее предшественников, злее следующих опусов. Иными словами, сбалансировано и самобытно. Убедительно преподносится ритуальная атмосфера.
