A Bulwark against Life 05:29 3. Lifeless Tide of Faces 05:39 4. Sovereign 05:36 ****************************** Total playing time: 22:17 (IMG:http://metalarea.org/images/youtube.png) Extended info Preview: Description from http://voidcraeft.svart.nu/: Voidcraeft is my latest one-man musical endeavour. Instrumentally speaking, it is somewhat atypical black metal with an emphasis on dissonance. The lyrical themes deal with emptiness, pessimism, renunciation, suffering and the human condition in general. In my early days I was primarily influenced by raw black metal like Darkthrone (primarily Under a Funeral Moon and perhaps Transilvanian Hunger, they haven't made anything resembling black metal in close to a decade now, though) and Katharsis (of Norma Evangelium Diaboli fame). In the past ten years the two artists I consumed the most and returned to over and over again are avant-garde black metal legends Deathspell Omega and Australian experimental (blackened) death metal pioneers Portal. Other bands worth mentioning are Nightbringer, Black Witchery, Diocletian and Antediluvian. The good old microtonal tuning I used to use has made a comeback on this release. I even considered getting myself a guitar with customised frets, like Adam Kalmbach of Jute Gyte, who plays a Fender Squire with 24-TET frets. An acquaintance of mine also suggested that I should give fretless guitars a try, but I doubt that would work for me. This constant minor pitch shifting, which occurs even when you are good at playing fretless guitars, simply ruins it for me. Unfortunately I lack the tools and the skill to add new frets to a guitar. Perhaps I should check out some of the custom guitar shops in this area. As for the music, other than the tuning the release is very similar to With Neither Idols nor Ideals. However, I did increase the BPM from 163 to 173. My bass drumming technique has marginally improved since I started playing with my heels up. This release features some of my most inconsistent vocal work. I feel like I really butchered the vocals on the third track. Repeatedly falling ill over the past weeks also contributed to that. As for the lyrics, this time they were predominantly inspired by Fernando Pessoa's outstanding "The Book of Disquiet" and also by Arthur Schopenhauer's "Essays and Aphorisms", in particular "On the Suffering of the World" and "On the Vanity of Existence". I should probably check out more of Pessoa's work after finishing "Crime and Punishment" by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, which, I must admit, is boring me so far. I did not even manage to convert all of my notes I made reading "The Book of Disquit" into lyrics, so it will definitely make another appearance, on the next release. It seems that I have been quite productive lately. In the past making music was exhausting and I struggled with seeing value in what I was doing. Nowadays, I do not think as much about doing and just... do. Register
