This reissue is interesting mainly due to some old pictures of Graveland, but it's much better to talk about the original version released by Melissa Productions in 1994. The Celtic Winter is the quintessence of 90s Polish Black Metal. One of the best release of Polish Black Metal and Graveland ever. Extremely influenced by Norwegian Black Metal and their actions like church burnings, thus this very raw, gloomy, evil, hateful sound. I think all tracks are excellent, but for me Call of the Black Forest and The Gates to the Kingdom of Darkness are on the top of the best Graveland songs. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/true_black.gif)

...the original version released by Melissa Productions in 1994. The Celtic Winter is the quintessence of 90s Polish Black Metal. I agree, of course! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/true_black.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/25.gif) B.t.w. ......why this particular edition is so much sought after? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/hmm.gif) I've also seen in numerous want-lists the 3 tracks version by No Colours Rec., can you also explain why?? Was it a very limited edition, perhaps? Or just for the sound in it, maybe better than any other re-release? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/hmm.gif) |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/hmm.gif) This demo was recorded in Winter 1993 and as far I know this MCD - 3 tracks version by No Colours Rec. was released before the ''full demo'' (7 tracks) by Melissa Productions. These releases may have been limited, so I guess that's why they are rare. No Colours Rec. also had some problems with the police and many of their releases were confiscated, including Graveland. I remember someone told in an interview that Melissa Prod. wasn't that much into Black Metal, but I can't find this interview at this moment... More common version was the CD released in 1996 by No Colours Rec. with different cover. Note that in 1996 version the fifth track is ''Prolog'', while in 1994 there was ''Outro'' at the end. The 1996 version doesn't recall Karcharoth who was recording this stuff with Rob Darken and Capricornus. |

One of the best release of Polish Black Metal and Graveland ever. Truly agree! Even subsequent "CW" and "TS" which are of early period of Graveland are not so inspired to me. No Colours Rec. also had some problems with the police and many of their releases were confiscated, including Graveland. I wasn't aware of that. Now it's clear why some early NC releases are really hard to come by. This demo was recorded in Winter 1993 and as far I know this MCD - 3 tracks version by No Colours Rec. was released before the ''full demo'' (7 tracks) by Melissa Productions. MA states that Melissa Tape was released in may 94 and Discogs states about MCD - dec 94. If that is the case, strange that MCD contain less tracks than Melissa Tape. |

Truly agree! Even subsequent "CW" and "TS" which are of early period of Graveland are not so inspired to me. I like these albums very much. They have the true spirit which most of Black Metal bands don't have nowadays... The Celtic Winter is the most inspiring though. Perfect and even better continuation of In the Glare of Burning Churches. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/25.gif) These demos along with first album Carpathian Wolves are a great trilogy. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/true_black.gif) I wasn't aware of that. Now it's clear why some early NC releases are really hard to come by. MA states that Melissa Tape was released in may 94 and Discogs states about MCD - dec 94. If that is the case, strange that MCD contain less tracks than Melissa Tape. Yes, it's strange and I'm not sure about this 3 track version, but according to an interview with Rob Darken in Holocaust zine (vol. 7, 1994) these three tracks were recorded in November 1993. It means that it wasn't even in Winter, but Autumn and it was Hammer of Damnation which planned to release this MCD. |
