Suffering from a disease

Давным давно в далекой-далекой галактике, когда я был еще непросвещенным салагой, послушал я этот альбом, и он меня совершенно не цепанул. Теперь вот переслушал, ёлки-палки, да это же ИЗУМИТЕЛЬНО!

После дебютника альбом кажется очень тяжелым, но в отличие от одногодка Altars Of Madness здесь нет такой скорости и каши. Приятно низко настроены гитары, ударные прибавили в мощи, обросли эхом, что плюс к атмосфере альбома. Ван Друнен поет в более жесткой и истеричной манере, это придает альбому сильное сопроводительное чувство внутреннего саморазрушения, и в то же время добавляет напряженности в окружение. Dehydrated, The Trauma, Chronic Infection, Out Of The Body, Reduced To Ashes наиболее ударные трэки. Особенно приятное впечатление производит последний, который следует после не совсем вразумительного инструментала. Ну и The Trauma очень сильная композиция.

Тоже надо будет покупать.

Это первый дэтовый альбом, который я услышал в далёком 1990-м году (до этого слушал только трэш, ну и Napalm Death и Carcass)
Пожалуй, именно из-за этого альбома я и подсел на дэт (точнее из-за того, что он не понравился и захотелось еще чего-то похожего)

До сего дня не слышал этот классик альбом с изъеденной муравьями рёжой. А зря! Технично, искренне, зло, при этом по домашнему уютненько. Узнал, что здесь Дрюня вокалит - удиавился - порадовался. К 1989 году death metal окончательно повзрослел и отпочковался от своего предка thrash metal. Произошло это не в последнюю очередь стараниями Chuck Schuldiner, а также куда менее культовых, но почитаемых в андеграунде Necrophagia. В рассматриваемом же году вышел целый ряд полноформатных работ, в той или иной мере имеющих непосредственное отношение к смертельному металу: Obituary "Slowly We Rot", Autopsy "Severed Survival", Bolt Thrower "Realm of Chaos", Morbid Angel "Altars of Madness", Carcass "Symphonies of Sickness", Loudblast "Sensorial Treatment". Patrick Mameli, искавший самовыражения в крайне злобных и экстремальных музыкальных формах, не мог пропустить такой тренд и запрыгнул в уже отправляющийся поезд первопроходцев: обозреваемая работа вышла на Рождество (гы), 25 декабря 1989 года. Данному действу предшествовали небольшие перемены в составе: Randy Meinhard, имевший своё видение того, какую музыку стОит играть, покинул Pestilence и основал Sacrosanct. Его место занял Patrick Uterwijk. Вдвоём со своим тёзкой они и написали бОЛьшую часть музыки для второго альбома. Лирику же написали Marco Foddis и Martin van Drunen.

Как вы уже догадались, "чумной квартет" из Нидерландов на своей второй работе плотно встал на рельсы смертельного метала: рык Martin van Drunen стал глубже, бас ещё сильнее утоп в миксе (хотя в начале Reduced to Ashes, где ритм-секция ведёт довольно быстрый темп под медленный рифф, его наоборот слышно очень отчётливо), риффы стали более вязкими, а звучание грубым и неряшливым. Marco Foddis держит довольно высокий темп (в том числе и на зловещих замедлениях, когда гитары темп существенно снижают) и плотно работает двумя бочками, но до бласт-битов не доходит (так что одногодка от Morbid Angel был всё равно забойнее). На медленных отрезках у группы реально получается нагнать мраку, особенно когда на фоне тягучих медленных риффов звучит колокол или клавишные эффекты. Соло оба Патрика играют попеременно (благо в композиции их может быть несколько), но не могу сказать, что оба гитариста имеют яркую индивидуальность, потому распознать, кто где играет (не прибегая к дополнительным материалам), есть не самая простая задача.

Выделю визитку группы Out of the Body с самым ярким риффом на альбоме, ломовую и башкотрясную Dehydrated, бульдозерную The Process of Suffocation, уже упомянутую неторопливую Reduced to Ashes (завершающую трек-лист) и предваряющий её двухминутный мечтательный инструментал Proliferous Souls (даже и не скажешь, что его сочиняли суровые металисты).

Запись обозреваемой работы проходила в Берлине в Music Lab Studios, под руководством Harris Johns. В 2017 году альбом был ремастирован усилиями нидерландского лейбла Hammerheart Records, в результате чего звук стал громче (традиционно для ремастеров) и существенно чище (бас местами стало слышно даже лучше, чем на оригинале, что в целом нехарактерно для ремастеров). В целом ремастированный вариант звучит мощнее и разборчивее, но при этом часть шарма грязноватого оригинала была утеряна. И если в случае с дебютом я однозначно за ремастированную версию, то в случае с обозреваемой работой выбор не так однозначен. Могу лишь сказать, что оригинал и переиздание звучат очень по-разному.
