Альбом - одно из выразительнейших явлений звездного 92-года. Это, если хотите, и 5/5, и 10/10, и 666/666 в одном. Топовый альбом. Феномен.
В сравнении с дебютом материл более сбалансированный, кибер-атмосфера шикарнейшая. Знаете, вот этот альбомы за счет своей особенной атмосферы у меня ассоциируется со всякими трешовыми спейс-хоррорами восьмидесятых-девяностых а-ля Темная сторона луны, Ночной полет, Сквозь горизонт или более серьезными явления как Чужой. Послушать это произведение все равно что посмотреть классно снятый приключенческий фильм. Очень вкусный релиз, во многом показавший миру, чтобы в музыкальном экстриме можно и нужно создавать разного рода атмосферные пассажи, не теряя при этом (Death) Metal-стержень. Композиторская работа прекрасна от и до, техника - ювелирная, теплый ламповый звук лишь подчеркивает правильно расставленные акценты и нетривиальный подход, незаурядное творческое мышление. Для своего времени Ноктурнус как музыкальное явление настоящие уникумы и оригинальны. Казалось бы считай уже прошло тридцать лет со времен выпуска The Key и Thresholds, а они так и остались особенными релизами, непревзойденными. Сейчас во времена перевирания с попыткой выдать за свое, а то и откровенного копирования, с Nocturnus никто даже скорчить нормально не смог. |

Я больше к тому, что если покопаться, то иной раз мелкие группешки просят указать лейбл, мол мы играем музыку в духе тех-то и тех-то и на рекламном стикере пяток любимых групп типа Death, Atheist, Nocturnus, Cynic и т.д. На деле же оказывается лютая уетятина. И к названным группам никто даже не смог приблизиться. В мире Death Metal есть ассоциативный ряд из нескольких десятков групп-столпов жанра, чье творчество по отношению к подражателям первично, я об этом. |

Не даётся мне эта группа никак. Слушаю и слушаю, очень внимательно, вдумчиво слушаю, но никак не заходит и все тут. Вроде и не тянет выключить, но совершенно не торкает, скукота сплошная. Ощущение что некоторые соло вставлены ради того чтобы вставить, но есть и реально в тему. Как по мне, так не однозначная банда. Хотя наверняка эталон и открытие своего времени. Видимо и правда, когда не твое, значит не твое. Может конечно и не корректное сравнение, но тот же Krabathor, из забытых и воскресших ветеранов на порядок интересней.

К моменту начала записи альбома остальные участники группы не иначе, как начали постепенно изживать Майка Браунинга, во всяком случае - уменьшать его влияние. Ибо оставили ему только ударные, пригласив на вокал Dan Izzo. Вокал стал не то чтобы прям суперовым, но всё же несколько выразительнее, чем у Майка. Впрочем, думаю, причина в том, что Браунинг банально не выгребал одновременно ударные и вокал во время турне The Key. Причем барабаны как будто намеренно утопили в миксе, сделав их тише, чем обычно бывает в дэте. Возможно, дело именно в этом, но у меня создаётся впечатление, что на Thresholds основатель группы звучит максимально ровно, прямо на пике своих возможностей (если не за их пределами). Басиста Джеффа Эстеса, имевшего проблемы с алкоголем, также уволили. На альбоме партии баса исполнил сессионщик Chris Anderson (больше ни на одном метал-альбоме не засветившийся ни до, ни после сабжа). Надо сказать, что в этот раз бас даже слышно. Что ж, убирать слабые звенья, повышая при этом профессионализм, иногда просто необходимая мера. Благо результат, записанный теперь уже секстетом (если считать сессионного басиста), получился просто потрясающим: ставший уже фирменным прогрессивный sci-fi дэт-метал с потрясающей красоты и впечатляющими по скорости и сложности гитарными соло (которые попеременно исполняют оба гитариста) и футуристическими клавишными. Здесь уже нет никакой сумбурности, которая имело место на The Key, здесь всё продумано и на своём месте. Альбом более размеренный, в нём отсутствует скоростная долбёжка по принципу "е...шим, это же дэт метал", но ЕСЛИ НАДО - то музыканты разгоняются до приличных скоростей. Точно так же и с гитарными запилами: нет повсеместного поливалова, могут просто прокачать простым риффом, подзвучив его клавишами (как на Subterranean Infiltrator), но уж зато на соляках сделают реальную кульминацию композиции (или части композиции). Мелодии очень хороши, особенно выделю короткую инструменталку Nocturne in Bm (в основном мелодическая часть отдана на откуп клавишнику) и потрясающе красивую именно в мелодическом плане Arctic Crypt. Да чего уж там, тут все вещи хороши: неторопливая, но со скоростными взрывами открывашка Climate Controller, которую развили до почти 8 минут, драматично-надрывная Tribal Vodoun, атмосферная Aquatica, качевая Subterranean Infiltrator, злая Alter Reality, переменчивая по настроению закрывашка Gridzone - все они интересны и достойны внимания.
11/12. Великолепный альбом! Золотой фонд жанра и классика. P.S. Браунинга после записи этого альбома всё-таки выперли, оставив за собой название. Что ж, вполне вероятно, что он обладает хреновым характером и уж точно вызывает вопросы его профессионализм, как музыканта. Но отдадим ему должное: он собрал замечательный состав, который подарил миру знаковые альбомы. |

На этом альбоме группа скатилась в какой то гaвеный Садус, и, оценивать его выше Blessed Are The Sick для меня - непонимание смысла дет-метала.
