В 16 лет Джейсон встречает человека полностью изменившего его музыкальное мировоззрение и повлиявшего на становление юного дарования. Это был великолепный Марти Фридман, который уже участвовал в выпуске нескольких пластинок. В это время Марти почти заканчивал материал для новой записи Speed Metal Symphony, гремучей смеси неоклассического шреда с экзотическим звучанием. Он был очень удивлен музыкальными способностями Бэккера и решает пригласит его для совместного участия в проекте, который получает название Cacophony. По словам Джейсона, просто играя, импровизируя и сочиняя вместе с Марти, он изменил свою игру и воображение на 200 процентов. Как неоднократно отмечал Джейсон в своих интервью: "Если бы не влияние Марти, максимум на что я мог надеется, это стать очередным Ингви-клоном".

"Speed Metal Symphony" был выпущен на Shrapnel Records, студии специализирующейся на выпуске записей гитаристов-виртуозов. Далее следует работа над вторым альбомом Cacophony "Go Off!", на котором уже большинство музыки было сочинено Джейсоном. Этот альбом продолжил традиции первого альбома - виртуозную неоклассику, но с еще более глубоким исследованием экспериментального и восточного звучания. В организованном Shrapnel Rec турне, Cacophony исколесили половину Японии и США.

В перерывах между концертами и группой, Марти и Джейсон работают над сольным творчеством. В 1988 Джейсон выпускает "Perpetual Burn", который явился шедевром виртуозного исполнения, грозных композиций и красивейших гармоний. Альбом показал огромный потенциал Джейсона, особенно выразив-шийся во влиянии классической музыки в таких композициях, как Air и Mabel's Fatal Fable. Некоторые соло для "Perpetual Burn" были специально сочинены и записаны Марти Фридманом, Джейсон тоже не остался в долгу, приняв участие в записи "Dragon Kiss", первого альбома Марти как сольного артиста.
