Ross Bay Cult

Interview of RYAN FORSTER / CONQUEROR by TEMPLO DEL DIABLO PROD.

"Deathlord of Abomination and War Apocalypse"
Conceptual and expressive herald of the supreme will, annihilation of the leash imposed by hypocritical society and religious poison. The transcendental freedom of existence imprinted in the iron conception of one's own being. Conqueror and lacerator of the philosophical "Veil of Maya", antithesis and desecrator of the Dogmatic court, through the affirmation of the supreme belly of death as the mother of infinite existentialism.
Templo del Diablo proudly opens its doors, for a profound interview with Mr. Ryan Förster.
First of all, Mr. Ryan Förster, thank you for accepting our interview, it's a real honor to be able to talk to a granitic veteran of the underground scene!

1- Let's begin...you were born in Canada, a land that gave birth to many bands that today are milestones of the genre. To name a few: Slaughter, Razor, Infernäl Mäjesty, Voivod ..
I ask you, do you remember your first approach with Metal's world? Was there an album, a band or a particular feeling that lit up in you, making you buy a guitar and become a musician?

RF: I already liked Heavy Metal music like Iron Maiden and Twisted Sister, etc as a really young kid, but then my friends and I started to discover bands like Metallica and Slayer and the crazy fast guitar playing and their ‘normal heavy metal dude look’ (jeans and t-shirt) and also the spikes and leather look instead of that glam look that was popular at the time prompted my friends and I to start a band together.
They also used to play videos of bands like Sacrifice, Razor, VoiVod and Infernäl Mäjesty on Canadian television, so I was luckily exposed to those bands at an early age and started to buy their albums at the local shops. I can’t remember my exact first moment with ‘Metal’s World’…. My parents had some heavy albums in their collection I suppose, and also KISS was all over the television in the late 70s and I really liked what I saw and heard.

2- Your first creature was Domini Inferi along with "Neutron Cannon" (drums and voice). With which in 1994 emerged, "Awaken (Beast Most Foul)" the first and only release of the band. From the beginning, you had clear ideas about the music to play and about the line up, even here only 2 pieces.
This was a fleeting project, which however outlined your will.
Why did you only create a release with Domini Inferi?
In those years where European Black Metal began to expand like plague, how was the situation in your city or in Canada in general? Was it difficult to find people, serious and motivated to be able to create a band out of the usual canons?

RF: We actually wasted a lot of time with Domini Inferi. We started up the band in 1992 and had a full line up. At the time ‘Neutron Cannon’ was just on vocals. We also had a drummer and a bass player. But as the first few rehearsals started these other guys in the band didn’t like the direction we were taking with the music. Neutron Cannon and I wanted evil and barbaric music and these other guys were on a different page. So first the drummer quit. Actually his mother was a Jesus slave bible bitch and made him quit when she saw her son in inverted crosses and death metal t-shirts. So Neutron Cannon decided that he would buy a drum kit and learn the instrument himself. Then the bass player wimped out and moved away from the city we lived in. So it was only Neutron Cannon and I. For some reason we were desperate to find members to continue the band and looked everywhere for others to join us. But we were listening to bands like Beherit, Blasphemy, Mayhem, Grotesque, etc and that was completely foreign to most others in the city we were living in. At that time maybe Sepultura or something like that was the most underground band people knew. No one understood what we were into. Anyway, instead of pushing forward as a 2 piece, we worked slower while trying to find other members to complete the line-up. Then I finally realized that we could in fact do Domini Inferi as a 2 piece, but I think that Neutron Cannon still wanted a full line-up to do live shows and things just fell apart.

3- Exactly 20 years ago, "War Cult Supremacy" was released.
The union between you and James Read has created a genuine and inimitable black gem personally for me, this album is the transcribed representation of chaos in music. Despite the passing of the years, this release has been reprinted several times and in various formats, a clear sign that "War Cult Supremacy" has left an indelible mark both for its music and for the concept itself.
Since you are the "executor" of this music, what made this album so special, which is required more today, than when it came out? A shining example was the live in 2014, where in addition Conqueror's destructive performance, people were numerous to attend this concert.

RF: While Domini Inferi was dying, I was hanging out a lot with J Read of Cremation. When both of our bands fell apart we started seriously talking about what we think a black metal band should sound like. And after some events took place we found ourselves in a position to start this band we were talking about. We were very crazy during the creative process for ‘War.Cult.Supremacy.’ and ‘Antichrist Superiority’. We rehearsed in a very strict environment and put ourselves in a state of total focus and total immersion. We only listened to bands like Blasphemy on repeat and went to the rehearsal space at all times during the day, even if it was 2am in the middle of the night. So I think that the extreme dedication to the project was why the results were so effective. If you are just ‘jamming on the weekend’ with your ‘buddies’ I don’t think that the results will be anything more than average. You must put sacrifice and energy into the music for the best results.

4- Always rewinding time to 1999, "War Cult Supremacy" in addition to music, was able through band's essence to create a philosophy of thought and being. The titles of the songs are a different vision from the usual acid Satanism, indeed they are wrapped in a more personal thought. The title of the album is a devoted tribute to the cult of war, as an affirmation of will and strength. What concept is behind "War Cult Supremacy"? What does the word "War" mean to you? What books, writers or historical figures have ignited in your mind this way of thinking, which envelops the album?I think of songs like: Chaos Domination (Conquer the Eslaver) - Infinite Majesty - Domitor Invictus and Command for Triumph.

RF: War.Cult.Supremacy. was written and recorded in 1996ce. It wasn’t released until 1999ce because of the incompetence of the label that we were signed to. (Evil Omen Productions). Finally Full Moon Productions in the USA were able to release the album.
The concept is pretty much as you mentioned in the question. It is an affirmation of will and strength. We had some influence by the like of Freidrich Nietzsche and Ragnar Redbeard, but in the end we were mostly influenced by an uncontrollable rage of hatred that was within ourselves. The 4 Conqueror songs you mentioned in this question all have lyrics about shedding of the indoctrination we are all subjected to in this society, and smashing your way to your personal throne as master of your own life. Men are inherently barbarians and when there are no wars or kingdoms to conquer, then you can easily get sucked into the world of lies and weakness as we see today.

5- Conqueror's cycle ended after some few years of activity, leaving forever a permanent imprint in the Underground's world. James Read continued with his musical projects, (Axis of Advance - Revenge), while you joined a band that is a true cult. BLASPHEMY. When and how did this pact of blood happen, that still today sees you as a stable member of Black Metal Skinhead? What conceptual differences are there between Blasphemy and Conqueror?

RF: In the end we both arrive at the same point. Blasphemy lyrics took to the ways of desecration and terror to destroy the shackles of religion, and Conqueror lyrics took to inner strength and knowledge towards the same goal.
Both J Read and I decided that we had enough of the city that we were living in at the time and made the decision to move. Unfortunately we couldn’t agree on which city to move to. We were both of strong will and walked our own paths. Even at the sacrifice of our band. Anyway, it was amicable as one could not force his closest ally to do something that they did not want to do. The Blasphemy guys were already fiercely into Conqueror as we established contact with each other a few years earlier. When they found out that I was now living in their city we started to hang out more and soon we organically found ourselves in the rehearsal room churning out the old Blasphemy songs!

6- Blasphemy need no introduction, "Blood upon the Altar" (1989) "Fallen angel of Doom" (1990) and "Gods of War" (1993), are 3 fundamental pillars in the underground's "temple. In recent years, Blasphemy have returned to desecrate many stages around the globe, I think about live album "Desecration of São Paulo" where there was an oceanic crowd supporting the band.I ask you, what makes Blasphemy a band so acclaimed all over the underground world? And what has pushed the band in recent years to come back to live frequently? Years later since the last album, is there a chance to see new material?

RF: I think that people can sense when something put before them is authentic or just useless nonsense. Blasphemy was a genuine creation made by guys with a very distinct and unique vision of what they wanted to unleash. I think that all of the classic Metal albums that stood the test of time over the decades are classic because they were created with drive and dedication to realize the final recording.
The thing with the Blasphemy live shows over the last 10+ years was that we were invited to play each one of them. Blasphemy never tried to seek out a show and contact organizers, etc. We were asked to do all of those shows. We were pleased to do them as we got to hang out with old friends as well as meet new friends and also blast the audiences with our unrelenting blasphemous devastation! We had no new material to promote or no need to promote the Blasphemy name or whatever traditional reason that bands go out to play live. We just did them as a reason to get out there and experience the metal scenes all over the world. I see many whiners on the internet not able to understand our reasons to do live shows as it confuses their way of thinking, but their thoughts never come into consideration when we agree to appear at these events. We do this for our own reasons and as long as Blasphemy are summoned to appear, then why shouldn’t we? Although most of the band wanted to write and record more Blasphemy, I don’t think that it will happen at this point. But you never know….

7- Finally after years of silence, you came back with a new band. DEATHWORSHIP.
Before raising the curtain on this excellent project. In these years of silence, at your personal and artistic level, compared to the past, which elements have remained unchanged and what has changed inside you?

RF: I was never really silent during the years between the end of Conqueror and the beginning of Death Worship. Of course I was in Blasphemy right after Conqueror, and then when Blasphemy had to regroup after the problems we encountered in the early 2000s, I helped Revenge, Black Witchery, and Diocletian write some songs, I helped Godless North with their Euro Tour and I also started Ross Bay Cult and distributed and produced merch and releases my Proclamation, Wrathprayer, Teitanblood and Antichrist (Canada). I told myself that I wouldn’t do my own band unless it was on par with what I had already released. Why put something together if it is just going to be completely inferior?? I see a lot of bands just putting out uninspired and weak albums just because they made a name for themselves in the past and they need the band to continue for reasons of greed, ego etc. I was never going to do this. Then I was talking with my old friend J Read and he finally had some time freed up since some of his projects were dissolved. I took this opportunity to get some music written and released since I knew that with the Conqueror line up reanimated, we weren’t going to release some weak or useless recordings. My standards were met. I think that I still have the same vision and objectives that I had during all my years behind the guitar. I didn’t want to repeat the Conqueror formula exactly; I wanted to approach from a different angle.

8- J. Read (Drums) - Deathlord of Abomination and War Apocalypse (Guitars, Bass, Vocals). We can say, its a return to the origins, and still the solid duo, grinds without mercy.
Ryan, can you define DeathWorship, as an "evolution" or rather a continuation of Conqueror?
What musical and conceptual analogies are there between the 2 bands?

RF: I tried to make something different than Conqueror with Death Worship. But I also had to do something within the parameters set by the other bands from the Ross Bay Cult. There are a lot of similarities between Death Worship and Conqueror of course, including our overall sound and approach, but also I think that I found another area of the genre that I can explore and expand.
One thing that is very similar between Death Worship and Conqueror is the way that we rehearse while putting together songs. We did this exact thing while writing the Conqueror songs. I work best with this method.
The lyrics for the most part are different. I had some lyrics that could have been used for Conqueror. (‘Superion Rising’ and ‘Masters and Monolith’ for example) but otherwise I say Conqueror almost had an optimistic outlook where weakness would be crushed and only the fittest would survive the chaos. Death Worship has a more nihilistic outlook that recognizes that anything to do with man is inherently doomed to failure and corruption and that there is no hope for mankind in any way.

9- Extermination Mass (2016) was the debut ep (Available in version: Cd-Lp and tape) always through the stainless label: NWN.9 minutes of pure cosmic and vital annihilation, stylistically this album remembers, at least for me, War Cult Supremacy. While "END TIME" (2018) second ep (Available in version: Cd -Lp and Tape), musically it is more "cured" and "reasoned". What is always clear is the concept, the philosophy expressed through a clear message DEATH.
What is death for you? Do you think that after the illusion of life, death is the annihilation of existence, or a life in death itself? Ryan, talk about EPS, and the concept expressed within them!

RF: As I mentioned, the Death Worship EPs are firmly placed on the paths of nihilism, hatred and dedicated to the ONLY force that has all of us collectively in its grips: DEATH! There is no use in worshipping your false gods! There is only death to end it all.
I have thought about the possibility of an after-death like most people on earth throughout all times. No one here can ever tell us what there will be (or if there will even be something). These days I hope that death is the end and everything we do, feel and create is for NOTHING. I hope that we are just an insignificant coincidence on an insignificant planet in an insignificant universe and we just rot in the earth until the Earth itself will be obliterated and forgotten in nothingness.

10- A true and coherent idea expressed through music, art and philosophy, over the years have been the only "weapons" that have identified a thought, outside the schematic herd painted as right by religion, politics and society.
What is expressive and existential freedom for you, living individualism outside the "collective" leash?

RF: At least I was able to find an outlet for my frustrations, hate, anger, and rage. I don’t know how things would have turned out if I didn’t know there was a way to unleash these thoughts and feelings through metal music….? If I had all of this built up inside me and couldn’t find that opportunity to make something of it, I probably would have had extreme mental illness or ended up in the prison system because I think that the only other outlet would have been violence and lashing out against society. It is still quite infuriating to see the herd of sheeple trapped and indoctrinated in their backwards worlds, but in the end I only look at myself as that is the only person that I have control of, and I am grateful in the end that I can see through the lies and ploys.

11- Deathlord of Abomination and War Apocalypse. The interview is over, yet thanks for your time it was an honor.
I leave you the conclusion with a wise message for the readers of this interview, and for our page. TEMPLO DEL DIABLO.

New albums of Blasphamagoatachrist and Revenge are really great news this year. It's always very intersting to read an interview with Ryan Förster and any other person connected with Satanic Skinheads. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/9.gif)
