Wilmar: Did Jed Simon use the Zimmers Hole interview to shamelessly promote his new project Tenet, now that I heard the album blasting through my speakers, I have to admit that Simon has been very modest: this is THE metal album of the year.

But what do you want with a lineup that consists of three quarters of Strapping Young Lad/Zimmers Hole, supported by metallic giants like Zetro Souza (Legacy, Exodus, Dublin Death Patrol) and Glen Alvelais (Forbidden, Testament, LD/50) who blast their way through your eardrums. Especially Zetro stands out by sounding more aggressive than he has done in years. What makes ‘Sovereign’ a top metal album is the combination of musical mastership, good songs, a huge production and probably the fact that it’s over in a mere half hour. It makes you hungry for more. It’s a similar effect that ‘Reign In Blood’ had: totally beaten down and dazed you are staring at your speakers, wondering what hit you and if it can hit you again.

Actually ‘Sovereign’ consists of nine highlights. Just the explosive opening of the album with ‘Being And Nothingness’, the fast pounding title track, the slow but tantalizing ‘Going Down’, the hacking fury of ‘Take A Long Line’, ‘Indulge Me’, ‘Crown Of Thorns’… Need I say more? And so what if it sounds a bit like Exodus, so what if it sounds a bit like Dark Angel, what the fuck? If it’s performed like it is on ‘Sovereign’, they can put out ten more albums like this. My wife is going to have a very bad holiday, because I predict this will be the summer 2009 hit for me.
