The title says it all, really: 16 discordant tracks that push the dense format of 2008’s In Narcosis to its logical extreme while simultaneously hewing to the classical loud-and-unrelenting approach to grind championed by Maruta’s spiritual forefathers. Hints of Napalm Death and Nasum abound, as any grindcore band worth its salt in 2011 should aspire to, but the sound of Forward Into Regression most closely parallels Maruta’s former labelmates Phobia: grind-by-way-of-hardcore punk, a convenient delivery method for fusing two historically angry genres and making ‘em even more unpleasant. This mix is not intended to be inviting by design; Mitchell Luna’s alternating grunts and screams – the voice of 1000 nightmares – are practically a warning to stand back and avoid collateral damage.

I have got some reviews I need to get done but when I saw this in the review pool I had to jump on it. Maruta is a heavy as balls Grindcore outfit from Miami Florida. These guys have been making a big name for themselves in the Florida Grind scene and the worldwide scene for the past few years with their first release "In Narcosis" for Willowtip and appearances at MDF. So in short if you are into Grind or things of that nature and you havent heard of them, then I doubt you are into Grind or things of that nature. Now with that out of the way, on to the review.

2008's In Narcosis was a filthy slab of dissonant grind that I really enjoyed. 2011's Forward Into Regression takes what we heard on In Narcosis and gives it a healthy does of steroids. It might be the addition of a bass player that did it but everything hear is faster, more deranged and beefier. Eduardo Borja's riffs are blistering, if I'm not mistaken his guitar is tuned to F and that makes for a distinct piercing sound. Mitchell Luna's vocals are on point for every Grinding Power Violence moment of this record. His lows rival anyone in Death Metal and his shrieks are blood curdling. The drumming is a straight onslaught Danny Morris blasts his way through his kit in a way that would make Danny Walker smile.

All in all this record kills. The best slap of Technical Grind that I've heard in a long time. If you enjoy Grind, Death Metal, Power Violence etc GET THIS. If you have liked anything that Willowtip has released GET THIS. Just GET THIS.
