'25 years'. In this month of April back in 1988 I was working on the first album cover/s. A split 12 Inch gatefold for the band 'Lawnmower Deth. Originally I was to do the one cover. But probably out of shear convenience for RKT records, ended up doing the flip side for Metal Duck. I was 17 at the time, which obviously shows. These were made on watercolor paper with gouache. about 50 cm square i think.

"This was never actually used as an album cover. I made this as an experiment to shift the gears a bit into a different direction.
This is based on a sketch i did on a Greyhound bus heading west in the Rocky mountains. I flew back east to Toronto and started the painting there, then returned to the U.K and finished it in Nottingham.
I presented a copy to Roadrunner, but they declined. All of my album covers have been commissioned works, so it was no surprise. In retrospect, I would see this more on an experimental Jazz record, if anything."

Album cover for the band Pestilence. This was for a final compilation of their music. It was also the last album cover i did for the 90's era.
This cover is copyright Roadrunner records. In 1997 I was asked by a magazine to send in some art to use as a cover for their next issue. Its common practise to use album art to feature as poster centrefolds and such promotional things. So i sent in a transparency of this art to be used in this way. Not a problem? The magazine then suggested i make a new artwork (see Green Eels image). I did just that. Unbeknown to me, they returned my 5x4 transparency, but made a duplicate copy, and sold this to a record label in Singapore. It appeared on the album 'Unmoored. Kingdoms of greed'. I only heard about this via a suspicious fan who emailed me much later. This of course put me in a litigious position with Roadrunner records who I had not been in touch with for a few years at the time. But who were advertising in this persons magazine. All I could do was write a letter explaining what had happened, and what this person had done. I never heard back from Roadrunner. I did also see some bad press on me, regarding the secondary use of the art for the Unmoored album. This bothered me for a long time, as i felt that the person in question not only got away with it for the sake of $700 (according to the record label he sold it to). But undoubtedly slandered my name in the process to cover his back and not loose his advertising client.

As you may notice, sometimes i build up layers using colour that wont be seen in the final. Something you cant do with gouache. Subject in this commission, is based on the bands thoughts / concept. Which i have re interpreted."

The creature here? part insect, and the rest is likely DNA strands from all over the place. Im imagining that it absorbs each prey, as depicted, and this in turn becomes an amalgamated part of the growing entity."

This is a design i made for the band 'Soul Rape'. ! Now that is a band name that is serious about destroying your 'entire essence' with their sound, if i am not mistaken. I'll post the final in a short while



Full version of the cover for 'Soul Rape'. I completed this maybe two months ago. I hold back on posting allot of art until a client is ready to have it out there. The band wanted a scene with ruined cathedrals / churches, being taken apart by a strange breed of serpents. So i see the serpents are 'huge, and are leaving a trail of shed skin debris, that is forming an organic layer in and around this place.

Here is an example of work that didn't get published. This was made last year for the band 'Vastum', in a style that is more painterly and gritty. Its actually quite hard to paint this way if there is a goal and design in mind. When i do paintings for myself like the 'Bodywork' art. there is no goal, no design, its all free flowing and happens in a way that is very expressive. So this art takes that 'look' but not the actual method of expression. Same with the art i made for ' Dead Throne'. Its hard to wrangle that in and keep it loose, you end up going over and over. In any case. this was held back in the dark archive.

A return to the band Gorgut's. This time combining ellements from two album covers I made in the early 90's. The main setting being from 'Considered Dead' (1991). The concept being that we are now looking at the same location some hundred or so years later. The place is a ruin, roof caved in and a strange fossilization process has entred the vicinity. With that, the encroachment of the boxed figures from the other album I made for the band (Erosion of Sanity)
These boxes hold discarded evolutional possibilities. Such as seen in another work 'Descendants'. Their DNA infusing all around it and growing a new breed of rejected life forms.
