Every once in a while you run into a band so undeniably talented that right from the first listen you know that they are destined for greatness. Godiva, hailing from Switzerland of all places, is such a band, and this is their debut. To say this album rules would be the understatement of the decade, as this is the finest pure heavy metal I’ve ever heard. Big words indeed, but not Cage, not Lord Weird Slough Feg, not Paragon, not Twisted Tower Dire, and not even Judas Priest with the original Painkiller itself can match this jaw-dropping masterwork of modern heavy metal thunder.
Godiva is not original, so don’t go in expecting originality or to hear something that you haven’t heard before. What Godiva has done is to distill every awesome aspect of pure heavy metal into one album: High pitched Halford vocals, angry lower ranged scream vocals, feedback heavy colossal headbanger riffs, dive bombing guitars, smooth yet furious guitar tone, and most of all, ingeniously catchy songwriting. All of this is combined to create a debut of such stunning, mammoth power that I feel positively insignificant in listening to it. The first time I heard the track ”Heavy Metal Thunder” I honestly stood up out of my chair, put both fists in the air, and headbanged along with the song while screaming ”Heavy metal thunder!!”. That has happened to me before (Most notably, every time I hear the song ”Kill the Devil” by Cage), but never on the first listen to an album. Not even Darker than Black affected me thusly.
The aforementioned ”Heavy Metal Thunder” is probably my favourite track on here, but there are so many massively enjoyable pure metal epics that I’d have to list pretty much every song on here if I wanted to recommend a good song. Most albums require multiple listens to get it all, but I honestly enjoyed every single Godiva song after a single listen. Does this mean the album is shallow? Hell no!! It means the album isn’t an aquired taste (like Manilla Road, Helstar, Fates Warning, and other equally good but different bands), and can be enjoyed by anyone who likes pure heavy metal at its finest. ”Riding Through Time”, ”Razorblade Romantic”, ”Sinner”, ”Bullshit Lover”, ”One Shot”, the awesome tunes just go on and on. Every track rules, and I’ll never get bored of these songs even if I live to be a hundred.
The vocals of Anthony de Angelis must be noted, as this guy sounds like Halford in his prime, perhaps even better, and a little less nasal. I’m not sure if he is the one singing the lower sections, however, as it sounds like a different person. Perhaps it is one of his other band mates (both the bassist and guitarist sing backing vox), but either way, it all rules. Not one single complaint about the vocals. Likewise, the guitar work is stunning: chunky headbanger riffs galore with an extra helping of feedback is the order of the day, and despite there being only 1 guitarist, in the form of Sammy Lasagni, you couldn’t tell it from listening to the record. Sammy also adds awesome classic heavy metal solos in the style of Priest and Maiden during their heyday.
The production must also be noted, as often bad production can ruin or at least damage an otherwise good album. Here, fortunately, the production is monster: Smooth guitar tone, perfectly mixed vocals and drums, and crystal clear overall sound makes this completely enjoyable to even the most picky of production whiners. (Like me.)
I love this album so much, and I’ve only listened to it four or five times through. I honestly can’t see myself ever becoming bored of it. Nearly every track on it is an instant classic, and even those that aren’t love at first sight will be very enjoyable to all but the most jaded of metal fans. I just can’t gush about this album enough: Godiva have put together what may be the finest pure heavy metal album of all time, but don’t take my word for it, go hear it for yourself. I’ll be waiting right here, headbanging along with Godiva’s thunderous debut. Instant classic.
