Back in the early 2000’s, I moved to San Diego with the band Difficult Henry.
I remember going to Cane’s in Mission Beach to watch Downspell for the first time. I’ll never forget the audible onslaught they laid down, especially the dual vocal attack of Wayne Price and Tyson Montrucchio.
I left thinking, "that's what we (Difficult Henry) gotta be like, that's what we gotta do. Destroy the stage…but better."
We shared the stage several times after that and I became very good friends with Tyson.
After many talks about our love for Sludge, Brutal Death Metal, and Grind, Tyson pitched me on a side project idea. Me on guitar and growls, and he would handle the drums. Simple.
First things first, we needed a name. I came up with Lake Of Maggots and there was no hesitation on Tyson’s part. It was perfect.
Next was bass. Robbie showed up with Tyson one night and even though i'm sure he wasn’t playing the right stuff most of the time, it didn’t matter.
It wasn't serious, or focused, it was cheeseball Sludge at it’s worst...but we loved it.
There was a lot of late night jam sessions since we jammed in the Difficult Henry room after their practice was over.
Most people never heard it, or even knew about it. We didn't care about any of that. It was pure.
We resurrected the project years later with other guests and an attempt to record it all, but it never really panned out.
Later, we discussed another recording idea. It had to be long distance, and at the leisure of our schedules, because I had moved back to Idaho. Again, it never really panned out. It wasn't both of us in the same room being idiots.
Tyson passed away in 2013. I made a promise to myself that I was going to finally make it happen. I just didn’t know how. I knew it had to be everything done myself, but not only had I already gotten rid of all of my guitar gear, I also hadn’t played or screamed in years.
Armed with a new awareness and limited knowledge of “in the box” production, I’m finally finished with the first EP.
It won’t be played live. It won’t be a band. It’s just me (with Tyson in everything I write) and a few guests.
That’s all I have to give, so that’s all anyone gets.
As Tyson said so many times, “now go kick yourself in the face!”
