Press Release

In a stirring and inspirational return to her roots, Loreena McKennitt has created a new album of traditional Celtic songs, recorded this summer in a historic 1832 temple north of Toronto.

The Wind that Shakes the Barley features nine songs, including such familiar classics as "Down by the Sally Gardens," "The Star of the County Down" and "The Parting Glass." The album also features a few lesser-known favourites, including "The Death of Queen Jane" and "As I Roved Out." There are also two instrumental tracks, one of which was written by Loreena to commemorate Irish-Canadian history during the potato famine of the 1840s.

"Every once and again there is a pull to return to one's own roots or beginnings, with the perspective of time and experience, to feel the familiar things you once loved and love still," says Loreena.

You may recognize some of Loreena's long-time musical companions who are also featured on the album. There's guitarist Brian Hughes, cellist Caroline Lavelle, violinist Hugh Marsh and hurdy-gurdy player Ben Grossman, along with a cast of other accomplished musicians.

The spectacular Sharon Temple is one of Canada's National Historic Sites and it proved inspirational for the artists. "There is a fascinating interplay between architecture and sound, visually and sonically," says Loreena. "The temple inspired us all."

The natural setting, with its abundant trees, wildlife and birds, was also moving. "For me, there seems to be a crucial link between close access to the natural world and creative inspiration,' explains Loreena.

"Видишь, вон там, в полях, зреет пшеница? Я не ем хлеба. Колосья мне не нужны. Пшеничные поля ни о чем мне не говорят. И это грустно! Но у тебя золотые волосы. И как чудесно будет, когда ты меня приручишь! Золотая пшеница станет напоминать мне тебя. И я полюблю шелест колосьев на ветру..."


Сборники традиционных песен зачастую звучат довольно специфично. Повышенная аутентичность тому виной или что-то ещё, но и в каталоге Лорины МакКеннитт (таких работ у неё было три с половиной) исключением из этого почти правила является только "Elemental". И я снова ожидал странноватых ощущений "заунывной пустоты". Глупо отрицать, что фолк в произведениях Лорины сильно адаптирован, как и не соглашаться, что она пересказывает его максимально талантливо, бережно, искренне и с заботой о слушателе. Многие её собственные песни в кельтском стиле мало отличимы от перепетых исконно народных. И заметить, что новый альбом не "полноценная" полноформатная работа, можно только по исключительной балладности и полностью акустическому оформлению. Негромкое журчание, ласковый шелест на ветру, мерное покачивание на водной глади - музыка живёт в незримом и безмолвном присутствии человека. Очеловеченность здесь очень важна; всё восприятие зачастую строится на взаимном доверии рассказчика и слушателя. Я ей верю, нисколько не сомневаюсь - она живёт тем, что исполняет. В ответ же она дарит волшебство, кусочек сказки, несколько вспышек красоты природы; погружает в тихие раздумья тёплым августовким вечером на берегу и сладкую дрёму в деревянном домике, занесённом снегом.
Кто слишком чёрствый и взрослый равнодушен к таким вещам, может оценить шикарный вокальный диапазон певицы (а ведь ей почти 54!) и красивую инструментальную отделку. Такой музыке никогда не помешает быть рядом под настроение. А я подожду текстов и самого диска, такое нужно слушать только с книжечкой и аппетитным кругляшом (ну или хотя бы в таком же качестве, здесь чуток дребезжит).

Herr Wolden, вполне в тему (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile1.gif) Я помню, ты их рекомендовал, и не только ты. По совету слушал "Silver Swan". Мгновенные ассоциации почти сразу исчезли. Голос напоминает, музыка местами, но как-то каменно, что-ли, неподвижно. Более электронно-клавишно и средневеково, нежели фолково. Это не недостатки. Чего уж там, группа известная и уважаемая, в любом случае послушаю остальное)

Разговор о Qntal,а они используют размеры Германского фолка (который возник в средневековье).
Для этого не нужно никуда углубляться,достаточно почитать их интервью. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/1488.gif)
Dead Can Dance к примеру использовали фолковые размеры многих народов.

Qntal, кстати говоря, используют ряд народных инструментов (скрипка, разные флейты и дудки, колёсная лира, струнные и ударные), а Silver Swan - их самый фольклоризованный альбом. И обращаются не только к германскому фолку.
