Southern Lord will proudly release the vinyl only version of the new Wolves In
The Throne Room EP entitled Malevolent Grain, featuring two brand new tracks
from the Pacific Northwest organic black metallers. Conspiracy Records will
offer a limited edition picture disc of the 12" for Europe, while Southern Lord
will release a black 180-gram version worldwide.

Recorded to 2-inch tape by Randall Dunn and Mell Dettmer in Seattle during the
winter months of 2008.

Уж не знаю точно, по какой причине, но творчество американской команды Wolves In The Throne Room, творящей в чернометалльных областях, пользуется немалым успехом. Страница группы на металл-архивах просто-таки изобилует количеством рецензий на релизы коллектива - достаточно сказать, например, что представленный здесь мини-альбом Malevolent Grain освещают аж целых 8 (!!) ревю. (Далеко-далеко не каждый полноформат добивается подобного к себе внимания!) Допустим, Wolves In The Throne Room, действительно, группа очень интересная, однако лично я с музыкой американцев ознакомился впервые, и данная ипишка не дала мне чёткого понимания силы команды. Ввиду расположенности этих ребят к очень длинным размерам своих композиций, их полноформатные альбомы обычно состоят из 4-х треков, поэтому стало логичным, что мини-релиз включил в себя ровно половину - два номера, звучащих соответственно 13 и 10 минут. Большая часть первого из них - A Looming Resonance - неожиданно медленная, спокойная, играется однообразным нетяжёлым ритмом, никаких тебе тут всплесков, и даже мысль посещает - да блэк ли это, вообще!? Все сомнения снимаются после отметки 8:00, когда стартует и продолжается уже до самого конца отрезок с включёнными-таки на полную мощность тремоло. Главная здесь особенность - это вокал: поёт высокий чистый голос, явно девичий (!), причём далеко не самый разнообразный, а скорее в манере, присущей инди-группам - что-то в духе Sonic Youth. Словом, ребята (и девчата) исполняют блэк неочевидных форм, что отчасти интригует. Однако, 2-я композиция - вещь с пафосным названием Hate Crystal - штука несколько иного плана: целиком и максимально тремольная, скриминговая по полной программе (верещит уже, судя по всему, сам Натан Вивер, лидер команды), агрессивно-бластбитовая и эмоционально-холодная; единственное отступление от однородной чернометалльности - это эмбиентальная концовочка, но она длится всего лишь минуты полторы. Что ж, надо признать, что ипишка выглядит достаточно неплохо, но и ничего выдающегося здесь мною точно замечено не было. Видимо, стоит ознакомиться с другими работами коллектива. 7.5/10
