Bitter Hжrvest, a name that ringed a bell, but I didn’t know why. After some research in my cd collection I found a compilation album of the Enschedese Headbangers Organistatie with a song of Bitter Hжrvest. Ow, that band.

The first song begins with a really sinister grunt, which really reminds me of the grunts of the Dutch band Orphanage. Then also the music starts and the doom is unleashed.
The music is slow, with quite some mid tempo (and sometimes even up-tempo) parts, and really has a great sinister sphere that really gives me shivers sometimes.
What I really like about the 1st song ‘Awaken’ is that a shot part of a melody that starts after about 3:50, reminds me of the soundtrack of The Terminator movie. Well I guess that is a coincidence. But for me it is really cool, because that tune also gave me the shivers when I watched that movie for the first time, and sometimes it still does.

The 2nd song begins with a great up-tempo riff and really has some spooky carnival sounds and melodies. I really like that. I really can imagine the evil looking clowns with sinister eyes and razor-sharp teeth. What surprised me the most about this album is the fact it really has very many mid and up-tempo parts. I’m not used to that that, but I sure liked it.

Above I said the vocals reminded me of those of Orphanage, but Philip K.E. Hцlzenspies has very big range of awesome vocals. The songs remind me of My Dying bride, In The Woods and the old works of The Gathering, but it sure isn’t a rip off. Of course the songs have an average of 8 minutes playtime. Hey, it’s doom metal, what did you expect?
The production and the mix are very good, 'Wilt' has a very clear sound and the vocals and instruments are balanced very well. Doom fans should buy this record at any cost.

Review:

Here's an interesting split. What we have here is two bands that feature 3 ex-Incantation members, being Ronnie Deo, Jim Roe and of course Craig Pillard. With that being said, one can almost know what to expect from this split release.

The album starts off with the Womb side. Womb was a project formed after these 3 members left Incantation, and continues in somewhat of the same fashion but with out the John McEntee riffs. What we do have here is really doom laden death metal that fans old and new can appreciate. The womb side is actually their one and only demo, and it's a shame they never released more material.

Womb is quite destructive but has a lot of open, evil sounding doom sections. Craig Pillards voice thunders overtop of the crushing music. The second track, "Thong" displays some of the best doom sections on the album, and really shows how well these guys can play together. Actually, some of these doom sections wouldn't feel out of place on a Methadrone album, a later doom project of Craig Pillard. The lyrics are destructive as they deal with degrading women, and the likes.

The next half of the split belongs to Disciples of Mockery, which features the same members except with a different vocalist. The transition to this side is not very noticeable unless you play close attention, as both bands sound quite similar and have the same overall vision. DoM is however, leans towards the more violent side of things in terms of music, once again comparable to Incantation's violent parts, especially the second Incantation LP.

One thing I noticed from the DoM side is there are some pretty black metal sounding riffs, where a chord is played and a shifting melody is hidden within it. These three songs are from the first DoM promo, and are a bit more primitive than the DoM full length. However, although some people feel this side isn't near as good as the Dom LP, I feel they are still strong songs and flow very well with the split.

This split is highly recommended, especially to Incantation fans, fans of Craig Pillard, and fans of doom/death metal. There is some truly well done song writing here, and it's a shame both bands (especially Womb) didn't release more material.

Cruciform was one of the seminal bands on Sydney, Australia's death metal scene at the beginning of the 1990s. With "Atavism" they became the first band to release a CD through Warhead Records, the Sydney-based metal specialist label that would issue a string of important albums throughout the decade. On this EP however, Cruciform weren't just spearheading the local death metal movement, but helping to pioneer the death-doom sound. "Atavism" actually predates both Anathema's "Serenades" and My Dying Bride's "Turn Loose the Swans" by several months; had Cruciform been able to continue as a band then they may well have gone on to be regarded as highly as their English counterparts.

The EP begins with an orchestrated instrumental piece which, at three and a half minutes, is way too long and adds nothing to the recording. Perhaps if it had been part of another song, this passage could have been acceptable, but as a prologue in itself it's just pointless. Fortunately, things really pick up from here and with the first monstrous chord of 'Sanctuary', "Atavism" is on its way to becoming a lost and forgotten classic. The production isn't what it should be, leaving the vocals somewhat buried and indistinct and the overall sound something a little better than the average demo, but the material more than makes up for this. Uncluttered by the likes of strings, keyboards and female singing, each song here is no less than pure, classic doom, with enormous, massively slow riffs and abysmally deep death growls from three different vocalists. Lead guitarist Leon Kelly adds a few clean guitar melodies in the huge 'Necropolis' and 'Reduced to Dust' changes the pace briefly to mid-paced death metal, thereby adding a little diversity and flavour to the proceedings. But even if none of the other songs fall into the doom category (and by my reckoning they certainly do) then 'I, to the Heavens Shall Lift My Eyes' surely does. It is this track alone that screams what an absolute tragedy it is that Cruciform isn't better recognised as founders of the genre. Moving at a pace so glacial it makes its six minute length seem twice as long, this track is nothing less than Doom At Its Finest.

Cruciform broke up before the world could appreciate them but they left behind them a six-track CD that any serious doom fan should have in their collection.
