Kristian Vikernes was born on the 11th of February 1973 at 21:58 in Bergen, Norway. In 1993, he legally changed Kristian to Varg and later started to use the name Varg Qisling Larssøn Vikernes as his pen-name. Varg, which means "wolf", says that he''s related to the Quisling family, a name that even became an international word for "traitor" (similar to "Judas") after Vidkun Quisling, a Norwegian political leader during the second world war, who founded a collaborationist pro-Nazi government. One side of Vikernes' family used the name Qisling, without the "u".

Varg's first band was known as Uruk-Hai, formed around 1988-89. In mid-1990 Varg took a one-year break, which he spent playing in Old Funeral, and later in Satanel, which he formed with Abbath of Immortal (Nor).

In 1991, when Satanel disbanded, Vikernes revived his project, changing the name to Burzum (which translates to "darkness" in J.R.R. Tolkien's Black Speech, which is spoken by orcs, uruk-hai and other creatures of Mordor.). Handling all instruments and vocals by himself, he then proceeded to write and record albums at a frightening rate; five albums - the s/t through "Filosofem" - were recorded in the space of one year, even though most of them were released later. In addition to all that, he joined Mayhem (Nor) on bass, as well.

In the wake of the notoriety surrounding the church burnings, and finally the murder of Mayhem''s leader Euronymous in 1993, Vikernes faced a trial and was sentenced to 21 years in prison (and 10 years additional confinement, a system that has since been changed). Not allowed to have a guitar in his cell, and proclaiming all Rock/Metal-based music to be culturally alien and non-Aryan in origin, he chose to continue Burzum in a keyboard-based, Neoclassical/Pagan Ambient vein for the two albums that followed.

Varg chose to end Burzum in late 2000, disappointed that fans were still connecting Burzum with Satanism, despite his allegiance to Paganism and extremist NS politics.

While in prison, Varg has published three books mostly relating to the history of Norway, Norse mythology and philosophy: "Vargsmål", "Irminsul" and "Germansk Mytologi Og Verdensanskuelse". He continues to publish books and articles, most which are political and about religion. See www.burzum.org for all of his articles and books.

According to Varg, because Euronymous was too incompetent to release Burzum albums on Deathlike Silence Records, Varg decided to start his own label called Burznazg (which translates to "Dark Ring" in Tolkien''s Dark Speech), that was later (in 1993) changed to Cymophane (Greek: "Wave to appear", the name of a gem that is shaped like an eye) and do everything himself.

Interesting anecdote: In October 2003, Varg had a weekend leave from jail, and escaped during that time - only to be caught back later the same day by the police. Rumors also began to circulate that a third ambient album was to be released, and that the plans were canceled after Varg''s attempted escape. Varg has denied this.

In March 2009, it was announced that Varg would be released from prison, on the condition that he would have to report to his parole officer for the period of a year. On May 24, 2009, he was officially released on probation.

Interesting facts:

Grishnackh contributed lyrics for the Darkthrone albums "Transilvanian Hunger" and "Panzerfaust".

AiwarikiaR (Eric Oliver Lancelot), the former Ulver drummer, was intended to be the drummer of Burzum during the short period that Varg was thinking about making live performances. Fenriz from Darkthrone and Hellhammer from Mayhem (Nor), were also auditioned - the latter was in fact announced as the band''s new drummer on flyers in the interim between s/t and Aske.

At one point, before the murder of Euronymous, Varg was thinking about signing to Earache Records to release his fourth album and Earache did want to try having a Black Metal act on their line-up. Though, Earache hesitated to sign him because of his highly racist views (and also the fact that at that time, Earache were a Death/Grindcore Metal label and not Black Metal) and Varg was arrested a year later.

A compilation released by Misanthropy Records in 1998 called "Presumed Guilty" contains the Burzum song "Et Hvitt Lys Over Skogen", which appears on "Anthology".

Burzum has no official logo, it simply is the name written in different fonts. The old writing is often considered as the logo, yet Varg did not intend it, but only took the font he thought to be good. So with the release of the new album in 2010 there has been no logo change, the font only is different because of the content of the new work and might be changed again in the future.

All albums from Burzum/Aske to Hlidskjalf were re-released in 2010 on Byelobog / Candlelight as jewel case CD w/ slipcase.

Et Hvitt Lys Over Skogen was released 2000-ish, I think; Burzum/Gorgoroth was 1998 or so. These were after the fact compilations.

Burzum/Aske is not a best-of; it's the first Burzum album, "Feeble Screams From Forests Unknown" (later retitled to: Burzum) with the Aske EP, with one overlapping track dropped for the Aske version.

«Sôl austan, Mâni vestan» will feature ≈58 minutes of instrumental electronic music, that can best be described as relaxing, slow-paced, contemplative and very much original. You have not heard anything like this before, although we can compare it to other electronic music, such as Tangerine Dream, from the 1980ies — and I guess to old electronic Burzum music as well.

Much of the scaldic music of this album is used as a soundtrack for the ForeBears film that my wife has now finished. In this film there will also be a few tracks not to be found on the next album, and that I will instead simply make available as free and downloadable tracks, or possibly as YouTube videos or something like that. They are not in the same style as the rest of the tracks on «Sôl austan, Mâni vestan» – one is even a «fairly acoustic» guitar & bass track – so they didn’t fit in, and I see no reason for me not to give some music away for free as well. I will probably be able to feed my family nevertheless, and hopefully even have money for butter and salt as well.

Как многие из вас знают, моя профессия – музыкант. Я занимаюсь и иными делами, но ни одно из них не является достаточно доходным или хорошо сказывается на моей репутации среди тех, кто владеет этим миром, но именно музыка кормит меня. Благодаря этому я чувствую себя независимым, и хотел бы поблагодарить всех, кто помогает мне вести это вольготное существование. Я очень благодарен вам за эту искреннюю поддержку.

Как вы, должно быть, знаете, я издавал около одного альбома в год, с тех пор как в 2009 году был изгнан из Норвегии алчными адвокатами, представляющими интересы "однажды норвежского" государства, утверждающими, что я должен их клиентам несколько десятков миллионов норвежских крон (около нескольких миллионов евро), вследствие ряда удачных обстоятельств, приведших к сжиганию нескольких сатанинских храмов по всей Норвегии в начале 1990-х годов. Так что хотя я и умудрился пробраться обратно в Норвегию практически незамеченным и записать эти три альбома Burzum, "Belus", "Fallen" и "Umskiptar", музыка на них на самом деле писалась во Франции, а в случае с "Belus" - отчасти во Франции (в Бретани), где я живу большую часть времени с тех пор.

Будучи музыкантом, я продолжил сочинять музыку, а недавно ошарашил своего менеджера вопросом относительно выхода нового альбома. На тот момент он не был в курсе, что я сочинил новый альбом. К сожалению, я не поведал об этом никому другому, поэтому моя звукозаписывающая компания и распространители тоже были захвачены врасплох, и в результате выяснилось, что им требуется около трёх месяцев, чтобы издать следующий альбом Burzum. Думаю, они делают это немного неохотно, ибо издание альбома каждый год – очевидно, не самая лучшая бизнес-идея. Хотя я думаю, что всё сложится нормально, поэтому в течение этого лета я издам новый альбом Burzum под названием "Sôl austan, Mâni vestan" (перевод указан в заголовке этой статьи).

"Sôl austan, Mâni vestan" представляет собой около 58 минут инструментальной электронной музыки, которую лучше всего можно охарактеризовать как расслабляющая, медленная, созерцательная и весьма оригинальная. До сих пор вы никогда не слышали ничего подобного, хотя её можно сравнить с другой электронной музыкой, такой как Tangerine Dream, и, полагаю, также со старой электронной музыкой Burzum.

Большая часть скальдической музыки этого альбома используется в качестве саундтрека фильма "Предки", который завершила снимать моя супруга. В этом фильме также будет несколько композиций, которые отсутствуют на следующем альбоме, которые я выложу в открытый доступ для скачивания или, возможно, сделаю из них видеоролики на YouTube, или нечто подобное. "Sôl austan, Mâni vestan", как и три другие, так называемые, пост-тюремные альбомы Burzum, является концептуальным альбомом. Я по-прежнему не могу оставить в покое языческую религиозно-духовную идею нисхождения во тьму и следования обратно к свету: языческую мистерию, вознесение человека к божественному, просветление разума, вскармливание эльфийского света в человеке. Я не смог отказаться от старого норвежского (т.е. древненорвежского) языка, хотя, поскольку альбом является инструментальным, в этот раз он использован лишь в отношении названия композиций.

Будучи инструментальным альбомом, а также чисто электронным альбомом, "Sôl austan, Mâni vestan", разумеется, весьма отличается от того же "Umskiptar", моего последнего металлического альбома. В очередной раз я отошёл от металлического жанра и избрал иной путь, но исключительно ради того, чтобы по своей воле следовать своему языческому духу, куда бы он ни повёл меня. На сей раз он радушно повёл меня к востоку от солнца и к западу от луны.
