The Journey Into 26:53 ****************************** Total playing time: 1:15:06 Extended info Formed by guitarists Brick Williams and Jon Shumway, this Utah metal quintet mixes ingredients from DREAM THEATER, FATES WARNING, METALLICA and RUSH. Despite constant personnel changes, they’ve managed to release three relatively decent albums of light metal (light as in ‘not overly complex’) – call them a lighter version of DREAM THEATER if you will. Wearing their influences on their sleeves, they balance old school prog with metal quite well. “Subconscious” is their most mature and better produced effort. Nearing the 80-minute mark, it consists of three epic tracks with two shorter ones in between, featuring purely progressive passages with metal tinges. You’ll never mistake them for GENESIS or YES, however, as the crew treat the listener to pounding double bass drums and rocking/screaming guitars duelling with the keyboard. Their material moves through a variety of musical patterns, styles and moods, with complex rhythms and sensible lyrics. The vocals are rather mild for this type of music (no grunts or screams) but are quite well done. Not absolutely essential but could appeal to fans of CLOCKWORK, ENCHANT, KANSAS, MAGELLAN, SHADOW GALLERY or THRESHOLD. Register
