The canadian project, featuring Finian Patraic (Aufnorden, Oldfir, Ifernach, etc.) embraces us in maritime mist, with this excellent record of old school, 90s influenced Black Metal. 4 lengthy hymns of stygian arts, honoring naval atrocities and decadent legends of slaughter amidst the waves, Gulguhk appears not as raw as on the previous demos. Although still with some moments of Vlad Tepes inspiration, as on past demos, this release is much more keyboard heavy and hypnotically conceived, not too unlike the works of early Emperor, Totenreich or early Abigor, with resonating, darkened and eerie keys setting a veil of threat and mystique above the knife-edged riffage that pummles through the mist. These moments are only interrupted by excellent Ambient passages with the sound of waves, the eternal droning flow of water as heard from the depths and some Dungeon Synth-ish moments as well.
