Extended info
This album is stitched together from those of my favourite songs whose titles contain the word “black”. Sometimes, though, there was originally a different colour there, but I cheerfully turned it to black. That’s what happened, for instance, to the Nick Cave song, which here is about a “black left hand”, and to The Stranglers track, now called “Golden Black”.
It’s not so much a collection of cover versions as an attempt to fold a tour of my personal archive of black songs into a ninety-minute record – from Russian romances and folk laments to Venom and Current 93. In places I had to change the original lyrics quite a bit, so that they speak about what matters to me now: tenderness towards darkness, a theology of hopelessness, and a joyful black fire.
Genre tags: avant-garde black metal, dark jazz, dark cabaret, dark country – and I probably stray into a few neighbouring territories as well (there’s even a trap-style vocal delivery in the Venom cover). Nineteen songs by other people that I’ve appropriated – and that have turned black if they weren’t black enough already.
humanimalien – programming, arrangements, mixing, mastering, cover art
All original songs were written by the respective artists credited in the track titles. This release is a set of transformative cover versions and claims no ownership of the original works.
