Here are a review - Releasedate 16th April 2011
Formed in Winter 1991 with the intention of bringing back the old metal spirit, Ungod went on to release several demos and EPs before unleashing their first full length album in 1993. “Circle of the Seven Infernal Packs” received a lot of appreciation. But it took another 15 years to see another gem of an album in “Cloaked in Eternal Darkness.”
When I heard this album for the first time, the one thing that came to my mind was that this is an underground black metal band that has been grossly underappreciated. This is a monster of a release that will take Ungod to another level. “Cloaked in Eternal Darkness” is a stand-out example of a good solid album which has all the ingredients to make extreme metal fans go crazy. Razor guitars and haunting vocals that will give you the chills of terror and excitement are the hallmarks of this album. The German misanthropes wanted an album as evil, old school, and primitive as possible; and they did not fail a bit. Right from the title track “Cloaked in Eternal Darkness” to “Night of the Forlorn Graves” there is no stopping this fast and furious music. There are some solos, which took me by surprise, in some of the tracks, giving enough atmosphere. These solos are done very well and are quite long.
Although there are some mid-paced parts, overall I’d rate this album as rather fast and aggressive. Ungod delivers blistering track upon track of unrelenting black metal. The vocals are downright haunting; a high-pitched scream that is just full of absolute evil. The vocals are complimented with simple but amazingly malevolent sounding riffs. The standout tracks of the album have to be “Morbid Predictions”, “Night of the Forlorn Graves” and “Phallic Megalomania”.
“Cloaked in Eternal Darkness” is dark and morbid in theme. It is nonetheless energetic and with very strong song structures. There are ample amounts of melody and aggression involved in every track. The production is simply fantastic and this is not one of those raw and clumsy productions, which a lot of Black metal bands adopt to give a different feel. Each instrument stands out and the credit goes to the entire band.
Recommended to fans of black metal that are waiting to be surprised by that one occult gem they wished they had heard years before. This will not disappoint any fan into the primitive and the “dark and murky basement” sounding production. Check out “Cloaked in Eternal Darkness” and it will be on your top of your collection any day!!!
