Spain’s RAGE N REVENGE (or RAGE’N’REVENGE or…several other ways of combining the three) have landed with their self-produced debut, “Apocalyptic Future.” The four-man group was formed in 2002 in Valencia and is looking to make waves with their Heavy/Power sound.
Unfortunately, I don’t see this band going very far at this point. Each track is a blistering slab of mediocrity that does little to engage the listener. Alternately I’m reminded of a knockoff of the least-inspired moments of PRIMAL FEAR or HEIMDALL. Rather than paying attention to the songs themselves, the listener will spend a lot of the album trying to figure out where they’ve heard a particular riff before. I was surprised when I realized that the soloing in “Show Me The Way” sounds a lot like the chorus of ARCH ENEMY’s “Dark Of The Sun.” Otherwise, though, you’ll be picking out primarily Power and Heavy bands, though I’m still trying to figure out where I’ve heard the guitar work from around the thirty second mark in “The Hit” comes from. Tip of my tongue. Overall, I can’t help but be reminded of STORMAGE, another highly derivative Heavy/Power band neither Alex or I had much good to say.
Really, the only aspect worth remarking on from this band is guitarist Sergio Collado. The material he plays may be derivative, but he certainly knows his way around a solo and is a talented shredder. Still, a good guitar solo here and there isn’t enough to redeem an album that is not only derivative, but not terribly interesting. The band really needs to look for an identity for itself before any more attention will be warranted.
