Shoggoth began in 1988 as a power metal band. Their current style is more like Rush. Runci's guitar work is heavily influenced by Allan Holdsworth. The vocals aren't too bad, but Caroppi does have an Italian accent.
Combination is Shoggoth's fourth release. The title track is a "progressive metal opera with a touch of jazz." The keyboards remind me of Dream Theater in places. Parts sound a lot like Pink Floyd. Other sections have a classic rock sound. I don't care for the guitar sound in "The Dance Of The Voltures." "Epilogue" ends "Combination" with a definite jazz feel.
"Rage" has a dark, angry, original sound; it is my favorite track on the CD. "2112" is, a revisited cover of the Rush classic. It has Shoggoth's touches, and is heavier than the original. "Reason" is another original track with alternating heavy and softer passages and is my second favorite from this disc.
