Additional notes:
The first band added to the Metal Archives.
Amorphis is derived from the Greek 'amorphous' which means without determinate form, shapeless.
With Violent Solution's break-up, Jan Rechberger and Esa Holopainen formed Amorphis in 1990 with Jan on drums, Esa on lead guitars, Tomi Koivusaari as vocalist, and Olli-Pekka Laine as bassist. Soon after signing with Relapse Records (which would remain their label until 2001), Amorphis released its first two albums, The Karelian Isthmus and Tales From the Thousand Lakes. Beginning with the latter album, Amorphis' signature sound began to change from the death metal style that characterized its earlier history towards a cleaner, more melodic and progressive sound.
As the band moved away from its death metal roots, it underwent a series of line-up changes in 1995 and 1996. Kim Rantala briefly became the keyboardist, to be later replaced by Santeri Kallio in 1999. Jan was replaced as drummer by Pekka Kasari of Stone fame. The band also picked up Pasi Koskinen as vocalist. Pasi and Tomi Koivusaari would split clean and harsh vocal duties before Tomi eventually stopped singing altogether.
After the release of Am Universum in 2001 and with the release of Far From the Sun in 2003, the band underwent yet another series of line-up changes. Jan rejoined the band as Pekka left due to family obligations. Pasi left in 2004 to be replaced by Tomi Joutsen after a year long period of auditions for the role. With the release of Eclipse, Amorphis would also sign with its current label, Nuclear Blast.
Supporting the launch of Silent Waters in 2007, Amorphis undertook its first ever headlining tour in North America. As the band continued to expand its international presence at festivals and gigs, the band recorded and released Skyforger in 2009 and The Beginning of Times in 2011.
In 2002, the band was asked for a contribution to the soundtrack for the movie Menolippu Mombasaan. The commissioned piece was a cover version of a 1976 Finnish pop hit "Kuusamo", which was given the full Amorphis treatment and remains the band's only song in their native language to this day: Kuusamo (Danny cover) (05:57)
After about 13 years with a steady line-up, Niclas Etelävuori departed in April 2017, citing severe dissatisfaction with the band's management. His acidic post was published on the band's facebook page, who however stated they wish to continue with their current manager.
Amorphis' official biography was published in 2015, written by Markus Laakso. The book is currently only available in Finnish.
Compilation appearances:
- "Exile of the Sons of Uisliu" on Death...is Just the Beginning II (Nuclear Blast, 1992)
- "Forgotten Sunrise" on Death...is Just the Beginning III (Nuclear Blast, 1994)
- "Light My Fire" on UHF/VHF (Relapse, 1995)
