The band got their name from a underground comic series. Shadows Fall got their start from opening for such famous acts like Cannibal Corpse, Death, King Diamond, the Misfits and many others.

Shadows Fall were the best selling artist on Century Media Records, selling over 200,000 CDs with the last major release ``The War Within.``

People believe that on their first album, ``Somber Eyes to the Sky,`` Shadows Fall were intended to be a death metal band. Though this is not what the band members intended their style to be. They claim it was because of Phil Lebonte (now in All that Remains) approach of singing, which did sound death metalish, that made the album sounded death metal influenced. When they recruited ex-Overcast member Brian Fair at the bands last show, they found their ``real style.`` The band doesn't consider their music to be metalcore, but neo-thrash with hardcore breakdowns and hard rock moments. Hence in their early career, they were melodic death metal (``Somber Eyes To The Sky`` to ``Of One Blood``) then shifting to a neo-thrash/hardcore sound with some hard rock (``The Art Of Balance`` and ``The War Within.``)

Prior to Overcast, Brian Fair was also in a group called Late Night Crue, a Mцtley Crьe cover band which was a one night band created with members of Unearth.

Zeuss (producer of the band's second-fourth full length albums) has once played in a band with bassist Paul Romanko. Zeuss is considered the sixth member of Shadows Fall unofficially.
