For some reason Mindcrime has stolen my heart. It already begins with the prologue of the CD: innocent children's voices and a peaceful tune belonging in children's rooms. But soon we are in the middle of familiar sounds with double bass drums, dominant guitar riffs and a singer who caught my eye by his various capacities. Let me tell you, in power metal land an achievement to applaud! But it is not only power metal which reigns here, so many different influences make 'Tourniquet Sleep' an exciting album.
The German band of the environments of Kirchen/Sieg can boast on five years experience and one can hear that. Their sound may even be called progressive from time to time by the atmospheric keys and a certain bombast, classical by those skilful guitar leads, but also fresh and rough by the well-done screams of bassist Mario Junker (superb!) beside the excellent clean vocals of singer Christoph Weller.
What makes this album so impressive are those catchy choruses. Just when dreaming away for a moment, supposing you are in a next song, there is a point of reference, just because the band always returns to the base after its roaming, in this case a recognizable refrain. These are the characteristics of epic compositions like 'Search For Serenity' and 'Dream Haunting Ghost'. They are only divided by a small spoken fragment by Oliver Philipps, a man also responsible for the top class production of the album. Beside some influences from old power metal bands like Blind Guardian and Savatage, the energy of bands such as In Flames and Sentenced have a crucial role. These more extreme elements make it not an ordinary power metal album, but one with balls. Short spoken intermezzos stand for the passing of time, in this context the course of a life time. The tracks are served with numerous unexpected but yet subtle turns, so that the whole metal pallet passes by. Not a second this becomes chaotic, one more reason to emphasize the musical abilities of the musicians. 'Seven Letter Generation' is one of the oldest tracks on the album and illustrates the vocal diversity of the band, once more surrounded by a not that simple instrumental background. Double bass drums rule on this CD! The pieces with great questions of life are repeated in choruses, supported by a footnote by the screams of bassist Mario Junker, the salt of the earth.
The album has got a splendid production, knows moments of introspection as well as brutal explosions and in 'Cradle Of The Sun' it has an epic closing track with a slightly longer duration. Every metal fan will find peace with it, for this is an energetic mixture of…everything. Recommended!
