Отличная зарисовка, в которой характеризуются основные черты Стокгольмского дэта: Genre Spotlight: Swedish/Stockholm Death Metal AUGUST 15, 2012 BY NVRMNDRCHTR
The past month or so I have been on a major Swedish death metal binge, so I figured I’d write a bit about it for those who don’t know what it is I’m talking about.
What is it?Swedish death metal is, pretty simply put, death metal. It took the style that was birthed in the US and made it more sinister and more distorted, with D-Beat Punk and Crust Punk influences compared to America’s thrash-and-hardcore-influenced classic death metal acts.
Where did it come from?Physically: While many people refer to it as the ”Swedish death metal scene,” it was mostly a scene in and around Stockholm. To say the Stockholm scene represents all Swedish death metal would be slightly misleading because a few years after the Stockholm scene erupted, another scene emerged from Gothenberg. The Gothenberg scene is credited to ”inventing” melodic death metal, taking the abrasiveness of death metal and mixing it with more classic metal influences like Iron Maiden.
Musically: As stated before, Stockholm death metal is heavily influenced by the early American death metal bands that started in the mid to late ’80s; bands like Death, Morbid Angel, Autopsy, Possessed, etc. While American death metal had more thrash metal tendencies (thanks to Metallica, Slayer, etc.), Swedish bands brought in d-beat punk influence (think Discharge). Early Entombed and Dismember definitely have somewhat of a punk feel, if the listener is keen enough and looks past the wall of fuzz and growls. The wall of fuzz seems to be influenced mostly by Canada’s Slaughter.
When did it get big?The Stockholm scene was ”big” in the underground in the late ’80s with bands like Nihilist and Dismember circulating demos in the tape trading scene. From there, the bands got more popular. 1990 saw the release of Entombed’s Left Hand Path, Carnage’s Dark Recollections and Tiamat’s Sumerian Cry. Those albums are regarded as the first recorded in the famous Sunlight Studios and became quickly popular in the death metal genre. 1991 was another big debut year for the Stockholm scene, as Dismember produced Like an Everflowing Stream, Therion made Of Darkness…, Unleashed unleashed Where No Life Dwells, and Grave recorded Into the Grave. Tiamat and Entombed came out with their follow-ups, The Astral Sleep and Clandestine, respectively. All of these albums are considered classics in the scene and are still widely popular today.
The success did not last long. Within a few years of breakthrough, bands like Entombed, Therion, and Tiamat changed their styles much to their fans chagrin in some cases. Entombed ”watered-down” their death metal for a more simplistic style known as ”death-and-roll.” Therion and Tiamat used more goth rock influences. With the radical change in styles so quickly, the success of bands like Dismember, Unleashed, and Grave declined. Around this time in the mid-90s, death metal declined even in America.
What bands best represent this genre? As I’ve already mentioned, we have the giants of the scene: Entombed (formerly Nihilist), Unleashed (formerly Nihilist), Dismember, Carnage (broke up into Dismember, Carcass, and later Arch Enemy), Grave, Therion, Tiamat.
There are some newer Swedish bands that play in this style, such as Puteraeon, Bloodbath, and Entrails.
Opeth don’t sound like the bands that influenced them, but hell, Czech them out anyway! Also, Cadaver are in the same vein as these other bands, but are from Norway!
